Can Cataract Surgery Get You Out of Reading Glasses for Good?

By Dr. Audrey Tai, DO, MS, Athena Eye Care, Mission Viejo, Orange County, CA

The short answer: for many patients, yes. With a premium trifocal or extended-depth lens, most people read, use a phone, and see distance without glasses for the great majority of daily life. "For good" is realistic, because the lens does not age the way your natural lens did. The caveat is that the very smallest print or long fine-detail work may occasionally call for readers, depending on the lens you choose.

Why it works

The reason you need reading glasses with age is presbyopia: your natural lens stiffens and loses its ability to focus up close. Cataract surgery removes that natural lens and replaces it. If we replace it with a premium lens designed for a range of distances, we can restore much of the near vision you lost, which a standard single-focus lens cannot do.

What is realistic, by lens

Trifocal: the best chance of true reading independence, near, intermediate, and distance, with a bit more night glare as the trade-off.

Extended-depth (EDOF): excellent distance and intermediate with cleaner night vision; you may still reach for readers for the smallest print.

Standard single-focus: clear at one chosen distance (if you do not have astigmatism, since uncorrected astigmatism can leave a shadowed image even at that distance); you will still use glasses for the rest.

It lasts

The implant does not develop a new cataract and does not stiffen with age, so the result you get is durable. This is a one-time change, not something that wears off.

What a premium lens can promise

No lens can promise you will never touch a pair of readers. For the right premium lens, the promise we can make is that you will rarely need them, and we choose the lens around the tasks you most want to do glasses-free.

Frequently asked questions

Which lens gets me out of reading glasses?
A trifocal generally gives the best reading independence, because it provides a dedicated near focal point. An extended-depth lens covers most tasks but may leave the smallest print to readers.
Is the result permanent?
Yes. The lens implant does not age or cloud the way your natural lens did, so it does not wear off.
Will I truly never need glasses again?
Most everyday tasks become glasses-free with the right premium lens. The smallest print may still occasionally call for readers, which is the realistic expectation to set.
Does this work if I do not have cataracts yet?
Yes. The same lens-replacement approach done before a cataract forms is called refractive lens exchange.
