Laser Vision Correction
What do Laser Vision Correction (LVC) Surgeries treat?
Laser Vision Correction surgeries are designed to correct refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism) to provide a long-lasting alternative to eyeglasses or contact lenses. Laser Vision Correction is typically recommended for people who do not have cataracts or significant presbyopia. Laser Vision Correction Surgery treats the following refractive errors:
- Myopia (nearsightedness): Difficulty seeing clearly at distance, near vision is usually clearer in myopia patients when they are young, prior to developing the need for reading glasses.
- Hyperopia (farsightedness): Difficulties seeing clearly with near vision more than at distance. Patients with hyperopia typically develop the need to wear reading glasses prior to 40 years of age.
- Astigmatism: vision is blurry and shadowy overall, due to the curvature of the cornea being more oblong shaped than circular.
What are the different types of Laser Vision Correction?
LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery is the most commonly performed laser vision correction surgery. The excellent visual outcome, safety profile, and rapid vision recovery makes LASIK the most popular laser vision correction procedure performed today. Dr. Tai offers the all-laser bladeless WaveFront Guided iLASIK procedure. Before the procedure, Dr. Tai will obtain a 3D mapping of the surface of your eye using the iDesign WaveScan or CustomVue technology to create a customized and personalized treatment for your eye (the system utilized depends on your specific prescription). Dr. Tai then uses the IntraLase iFS Femtosecond Laser to create a thin flap on the cornea, then uses the VISX STAR S4 IR® Excimer Laser to perform Wavefront guided customized correction of your glasses prescription onto the cornea, followed by repositioning the thin corneal flap. Both the iDesign 2.0 and CustomVue systems that Dr. Tai utilizes will provide you with the most advanced and customized LASIK treatment that is available on the market.
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy)
PRK is a type of Laser Vision Correction surgery that serves as an effective alternative option for LASIK. People who are not candidates for LASIK are often candidates for PRK. PRK is commonly chosen for people who have a thinner cornea, mild corneal scarring, or certain occupational requirements. Compared to LASIK, PRK does not involve making a corneal flap. Instead a superficial layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is gently removed prior to the Excimer Laser treatment, and a bandage contact lens is placed on the eye after the procedure to promote healing. When compared to LASIK, PRK is usually associated with slightly more discomfort and longer recovery period, but studies have shown the final vision is equivalent between LASIK and PRK. Dr. Tai offers Wavefront guided customized PRK procedure using the VISX STAR S4 IR® Excimer Laser.
