What Is Mini-Mono Blended Vision With Premium Lenses?
By Dr. Audrey Tai, DO, MS, Athena Eye Care, Mission Viejo, Orange County, CA
The short answer: mini-mono blended vision means setting your two eyes slightly differently, one tuned a touch more for near, the other for distance, so the pair together covers more of your vision than either eye does alone. The offset is small enough that your brain blends the two views comfortably and your depth perception stays natural. It is a gentler version of traditional monovision, and it is my common default for extending range with premium lenses.
What it is
Your two eyes do not have to be set to exactly the same focus. In mini-mono blended vision, one eye is aimed slightly more toward near vision and the other slightly more toward distance. Each eye still sees a wide range on its own; the small difference lets the pair stretch further together, especially into reading range, without sacrificing distance.

Why "mini"
Traditional monovision uses a large difference, one eye fully for distance and the other fully for near. It works well for some people, but the gap can be hard to tolerate and can affect depth perception. Mini-mono blended vision uses a much smaller offset, which the great majority of patients adapt to easily while keeping comfortable, natural binocular vision.
How I use it with premium lenses
I often combine it with premium lenses rather than instead of them. Pairing a trifocal or an extended-depth lens across the two eyes and adding a small offset fills in the range and reduces how often you reach for readers. The plan is tailored to each eye and to how you use your vision.
Can you try it first?
In many cases the effect can be simulated or discussed in detail beforehand, so you go into surgery understanding what your two eyes will do together.
Frequently asked questions
- What is mini-mono blended vision?
- It is setting your two eyes to slightly different focus points, one a little more for near and one a little more for distance, so together they cover more range. The difference is small enough that your brain blends it.
- Is it the same as monovision?
- No. Traditional monovision uses a large difference between the eyes. Mini-mono blended vision uses a small one, which is much better tolerated and keeps depth perception more natural.
- Will I notice the difference between my eyes?
- With both eyes open, the way you use your vision naturally, you really do not notice a difference. A very slight difference may only be apparent if you compare one eye to the other by covering the other eye. The offset is deliberately small, and the effect can often be simulated beforehand.
- Does everyone tolerate mini-mono blended vision?
- The vast majority of patients adapt easily and notice no difference in everyday vision. Not everyone is a candidate, so we assess your eyes and your daily activities before recommending it.
