Cataracts
Understanding Cataracts
Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in United States, and they are one of the most common eye disorders that can affect your vision. The NIH projects that by year 2030, the number of people with cataracts in the US will be close to 40 million. Cataracts typically develop after 50 years of age, but can present in children as well. Cataract formation is the process of the clouding of the natural lens of the eye. The lens of the eye works like a lens of a camera that can change its shape, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye in order for us to see. A normal lens is clear, as we get older the proteins in the lens break down and become cloudy - forming a cataract. The most common cause of cataracts is natural aging of the eye, but other eye diseases, certain medications, radiation, systemic diseases, and trauma to the eye can also cause cataracts.
Cataracts typically continue to grow and further reduce our vision without treatment. It is recommended for people over 50 yrs to get eye exams regularly to monitor the health of the eye. If you are diagnosed with cataracts, it is recommended to follow up with your eye doctor once or twice a year to monitor the status of your cataracts.

What is the treatment for Cataracts?
Cataracts are typically treated with cataract surgery when glasses and contact lens can no longer improve your vision. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in United States with a high success rate of restoring vision. About 3.8 million Americans underwent cataract surgeries in 2017. Cataract surgery is typically done with topical anesthesia at an outpatient surgery facility, with minimal discomfort. With new advancements in technology, there are now different types of cataract surgery (basic vs Femtosecond laser assisted surgery), and different intraocular lens (IOL) options (basic IOL, astigmatism correcting IOL, or presbyopia correcting IOL).
