Is Laser Cataract Surgery Worth the Extra Cost?

The short answer: for some patients yes, for others it adds little. The laser earns its keep when precision matters most, correcting astigmatism, positioning a premium lens, or working with a denser cataract. For a straightforward case with a standard lens, traditional manual surgery is excellent and the laser adds cost without changing much. It is an elective add-on, so whether it is worth it depends on your eye and your lens choice, which we sort out together at your consultation.

What the laser actually does

In laser-assisted cataract surgery, a femtosecond laser performs several of the early steps, the corneal incisions, the opening in the lens capsule, and softening the cataract, under computer guidance, rather than by hand. The appeal is consistency: each of those steps is mapped to your eye's own measurements and executed the same way every time.

When I recommend it, and when I do not

Where it helps most: correcting astigmatism, centering and aligning a premium multifocal or extended-depth lens precisely, and breaking up a dense, advanced cataract more gently. In those cases the precision translates into a more predictable result.

Where it adds little: a routine cataract with a standard monofocal lens. Manual surgery in experienced hands gives an excellent outcome, and the laser is an optional cost rather than a meaningful upgrade.

The bottom line

The laser is a precision tool, not a guarantee of better vision for everyone. For the cases where alignment and astigmatism control matter, that precision is worth having. For a simple case, it is a reasonable thing to skip. I would rather match the tool to your eye than sell you a step you do not need.
